Gill, who is the captain of India’s Test team, suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. He faced only three balls in the first innings before returning back to the dugout. He didn’t come out to bat again in the first innings and, at the conclusion of the day’s play, underwent treatment at a hospital in Kolkata.
Ahead of the start of the third day’s play, BCCI posted an update on Gill and stated that he won’t participate in the remainder of the match.
India missed Gill
In Gill’s absence, who didn’t come out to bat in the second innings, India failed to chase down the target of 124 runs against South Africa in the fourth innings and suffered a humiliating defeat by 30 runs.
If Gill is not available for the second Test, then Rishabh Pant will captain India, and one out of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Reddy will replace him in the playing XI.
