Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Sep 5 (PTI) A mob attacked an excise team and forcibly freed an alleged liquor supplier from custody in Muzaffarpur district of dry Bihar, officials said on Saturday.
The incident took place at Rupanpatti Chowk in Sakra police station area during a raid on Friday.
“Acting on a tip-off, the excise team conducted a raid to nab Pankaj Kumar Thakur, who allegedly carried out home delivery of liquor in the region.
“The team intercepted him while he was travelling on a motorcycle but before he could be searched, a crowd of 20-25 people gathered on the accused’s call. They opposed the search, created a disturbance, and managed to free him,” Muzaffarpur DSP (East-2) Manoj Kumar Singh told reporters.
The mob engaged in a scuffle with
the raiding team, and threatened to damage and set fire to their vehicle, he said.
“A team from Sakra police station subsequently arrived at the scene, and along with the excise officials, raided the home of the accused. However, the accused had already absconded and no seizures were made,” the DSP added.
On the basis of a complaint filed by Excise official Upendra Mandal, a case was registered, naming five people as accused along with several unidentified individuals, he said.
Police said one of the named accused, Arvind Mishra, a resident of Rupanpatti, is currently employed as a driver with a Dial 112 emergency response vehicle in neighbouring Darbhanga district.
Further investigation is underway and raids are being conducted to nab the accused. PTI CORR SUK ACD
