AIIMS Patna Surgeons Remove 3.1 kg Spleen From 6-Year-Old, Set Record

In a landmark achievement, doctors at AIIMS Patna have successfully removed a 3.1 kilogram spleen from the abdomen of a 6-year-old child, a record-setting feat in India. This monumental surgery, performed by the paediatric surgery department, has garnered national pride.

What Was The Child Suffering From?

The child, suffering from a rare condition called Gaucher disease, had been enduring a swollen stomach, weakness, and frequent infections for months. His condition prevented him from leading a normal life, causing immense distress for his parents.

After several unsuccessful consultations with local doctors, the family turned to AIIMS Patna. Initial tests conducted by the medical team revealed the shocking diagnosis of Gaucher disease.

The decision for immediate surgery was taken

by Dr. Amit Kumar Sinha, who led the complex procedure. The paediatric surgery team, for the first time in India, successfully removed the largest spleen ever documented in a child of this age group.

The operation came with high risks, particularly the possibility of heavy bleeding. Fortunately, the child is now recovering well and has been discharged from the hospital.

The surgical team included Dr. Rashi, Dr. Digambar, Dr. Gaurav, and Dr. Saurav, with crucial support from anaesthetists Dr. Neeraj Kumar and Dr. Pratap Patra.

What Is Gaucher Disease?

Gaucher disease is a rare condition caused by a deficiency of enzymes, leading to the accumulation of fat in the spleen and liver, resulting in their abnormal enlargement.

The spleen, located on the left side of the abdomen under the ribs, plays a vital role in boosting the body’s immunity. In severe cases, a damaged spleen must be removed, though individuals can live without it with some added precautions regarding their immune system.
