Chaibasa/Gumla, Jun 29 (PTI) Two women, including a 23-year-old contractual teacher at a government school, were killed in separate road accidents in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum and Gumla districts on Monday, officials said.
In West Singhbhum district, Vandana Mahto (23), a resident of Rajgaon village in Sonua block, was killed after a speeding tractor hit her from behind while she was walking along the Sonua-Chakradharpur main road under Sonua police station limits, police said.
Mahto was a contractual teacher at a government intermediate school and was on her way to work when the accident happened, Sonua police station officer-in-charge Shashi Bala Bhengra said.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The
entire incident was captured in a roadside CCTV camera, which showed the tractor hitting the victim even though she was walking along the side of the road, the officer said.
Police have traced the tractor. Efforts are on to arrest the driver, who fled the spot after the accident, police said.
Following the incident, local residents blocked the road in protest. The blockade was lifted in the evening after the administration assured them of suitable compensation and action against the driver.
The body will be sent to Chakradharpur Sub-divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination on Tuesday.
In Gumla district, an elderly woman was killed after being hit by an SUV near Itkiri village on the Ghaghra-Netarhat main road under Ghaghra police station limits around 7 am, an official said.

“The accident took place when she stepped out of her house in the morning to dispose of cow dung,” Ghaghra police station officer-in-charge Mohan Kumar Singh said, adding the vehicle is being traced.
