South Africa’s tail-enders left no stone unturned to frustrate India on the second day of the ongoing Guwahati Test. After Senuran Muthusamy’s maiden Test hundred, Marco Jansen ended up scoring 93 off 91 as the Proteas posted a mammoth 489 in their first innings. During his stay at the crease, Jasnen smashed 6 fours and 7 sixes and was part of three crucial partnerships.
Jansen featured in a 97-run stand for the 8th wicket with Muthusamy and went on to add 58 more runs with Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj. In the meantime, he kept on inching towards his maiden Test ton. However, the 25-year-old was left heartbroken when Kuldeep Yadav knocked him over with a googly.

While the wrist spinner brought the much-needed respite for India, Jansen endured an unwanted batting record in Test cricket. He became the 11th player in the world, and the first for South Africa, to be dismissed in the ‘nervous nineties’ while batting at No.9 or lower in Tests.
Jansen is only the second batter to achieve such a feat against India, after Mitchell Starc, who was dismissed for 99 in Mohali in 2013.
Jansen hit as many as seven sixes, which is now the joint-most in a Test innings against India. He equalled the record of former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who had hit as many maximums during his 103-run knock in Lahore in 2006. Jansen also became the batter with the second-most sixes from No.9 or below in a Test innings, after Tim Southee’s nine on his debut vs England in Napier in 2008.
