A security guard in Mumbai’s Goregaon West was injured on Thursday morning after a stray dog suddenly attacked him near a school entrance. The incident, which occurred around 9.40 am on December 11, was recorded on a CCTV camera, and the footage has since gone viral on social media.
The video shows the guard walking through the gate while two stray dogs linger inside the premises. Moments later, one of the dogs approaches him. As the guard turns toward the entrance, the dog jumps at him and bites his left shoulder. The guard is seen struggling for a few seconds before managing to pull the dog away with his free hand. The animal then bolts, and another guard quickly rushes in with a stick to assist.

The attack has renewed concerns among residents about growing stray dog aggression and the safety of people moving through the area. Discussions online reflect increasing unease, and an official response from authorities was still awaited.
The incident comes at a time when Maharashtra has reported more than 30 lakh dog-bite cases over the past six years — an average of about 1,369 per day. Highlighting a surge in cases across both urban and rural regions, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the state assembly on Wednesday that 30 people have died of rabies between 2021 and 2023.
He was replying to a question raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu, who expressed alarm over the rising stray dog population in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Kalyan-Dombivli. Shinde further noted that the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, are now being enforced statewide following government directives issued in March.
