Grammy-winning music artist D’Angelo passed away on Tuesday, October 14, at the age of 51. The famous Black Messiah crooner took his last breath in New York City following a prolonged battle with cancer.
D’Angelo’s son, Michael Jr, has opened up about his father’s unfortunate demise that happened months after Michael lost his mother, Angie Stone.
‘It Has Been a Very Rough Year,’ – Michael D’Angelo Archer II
After losing both of his parents, Michael Jr opened up for the first time in public. During an interview with PEOPLE, he shared, “I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me,” adding, “I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts, as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”
D’Angelo’s Family Released Official Statement
As per reports, D’Angelo had been hospitalised for several months and spent the last two weeks in hospice care. On Tuesday, his family confirmed the news in a statement. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,” the statement read.
A source closer to the family shared that Michael Jr had remained by his father’s side during his final days. “People are really worried about Mike right now,” the source told PEOPLE, noting, “The 27-year-old has been through a lot in such a short amount of time.”
D’Angelo’s Partner Angie Stone’s Tragic Demise
In the 90s, D’Angelo dated fellow soul singer Angie Stone for four years and welcomed their son Michael D’Angelo Archer II in 1998. Angie Stone unfortunately passed away on March 1 this year at the age of 63 following a tragic car accident.
D’Angelo’s Career
D’Angelo was widely regarded as one of the most definitive neo-soul acts, with Billboard naming him one of the greatest R&B artists and Rolling Stone placing him in the 75th position in the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list. Throughout his career, D’Angelo released three studio albums, including Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah. The singer received four Grammy Awards for his albums Voodoo and Black Messiah.
