Shubman Gill is sitting out from the ongoing three-match ODI series between India and South Africa as he continues recovery from a neck injury. Gill is now reportedly set to start his rehabilitation at the BCCI
Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from Monday.
The positive development raises hope of Gill potentially getting fit in time for the upcoming five-match T20I series between India and South Africa. However, his comeback won’t be rushed.
“There are no red flags at the moment, and he has taken multiple flights – Kolkata to Guwahati, Guwahati to Mumbai, Mumbai to Chandigarh and now Chandigarh to Bengaluru – without any discomfort. All efforts right now are aimed at having him back on the park but it will not be a rushed process,” timesofindia.com quoted a source as saying.
As per the report, Gill underwent physiotherapy sessions in Mumbai and was recommended rest before starting his rehab from the injury he suffered during the second day of the Kolkata Test that resulted in him being hospitalised.
The India Test and ODI captain hasn’t batted since the injury but is expected to start practising in the coming days.
“The moment he is 100% and feels ready for the grind, he will be back with the squad. He is an important all-format player, and everyone wants him to be absolutely ready,” the publication quoted a source as saying.
In Gill’s absence, India are being led by KL Rahul in the three-match series against South Africa that got underway in Ranchi on Sunday. India eked out a 17-run win in a high-scoring contest that saw Virat Kohli scoring a century while Rohit Sharma hitting fifty. The second match will be played in Raipur on Wednesday.
Besides Gill, India are also missing the services of middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer who is recovering from a near-fatal injury that he picked while fielding during an ODI in Australia.
India bowling coach Morne Morkel recently revealed that Iyer has started his rehab.
