A fire broke out in the general coach of the 14618 Amritsar–Purnia Jansewa Express on Friday evening near Sonbarsha Kutchehry station under the Samastipur division.
According to preliminary reports, the
fire may have been triggered by a mobile phone explosion or a bidi/cigarette mishap.
The fire was quickly brought under control using extinguishers, and no passenger injuries or casualties were reported. All passengers were safely shifted to other coaches, said Indian Railways in an official statement.
Civil police and forensic teams have reached the spot, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
A video of the incident circulating on social media shows panic and chaos among passengers as smoke billows from one of the train’s coaches.
People can be seen rushing out of the compartments, shouting, while others move away from the train for safety. News18 cannot independently verify the authenticity of the video.
In a separate incident that took place on October 18, a fire broke out in a coach of the Amritsar-Saharsa Garib Rath Express near Sirhind railway station.
According to the Railway Board, one person sustained minor injuries in the incident which took place at nearly 7:30 AM.
A Government Railway Police (GRP) official said smoke was noticed in one of the AC coaches of the train, after which a passenger pulled a chain (alarm chain pulling system) to stop the train.
