Star India cricketer Hanuma Vihari has said that more than his playing attributes, which include opening the batting in T20s or keeping wickets, the Chennai Super Kings were more intent on trading in Sanju Samson because of his ‘face value’, to exploit the fanbase that the cricketer has in the southern part of the country.
Samson’s move to CSK is being hailed as one of the biggest trades in IPL history. He was acquired from the Rajasthan Royals just ahead of the mini auction, with CSK pulling off a major coup by landing the Royals’ skipper.
In exchange, CSK parted ways with star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and England pace-bowling all-rounder Sam Curran.
Although teams like the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders were also in the race to sign
Samson, CSK defeated them to his signature. Vihari has pointed out that CSK’s decision to buy Samson was driven not just by his playing ability, but by another key factor altogether.
As per Vihari, CSK’s move for Samson was aimed at making him the face of the team.
“Samson enjoys huge fan support in the South. When you think about the IPL, it is not just about cricket and if you believe otherwise, you are mistaken. That is because IPL owners think beyond cricket and focus on how much commercial value a player can bring to the team,” Vihari said while speaking on his Instagram account.

“Samson is a cricketer with a massive fan following. Wherever games are played, Kerala fans turn up and cheer for him. CSK don’t need an opener for the next season. They already have openers,” Vihari said.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad is also a player who plays as an opener. So, in reality, they did not need Sanju in the team. After returning from injury, he also played at number three for the Rajasthan Royals in the previous season,” Vihari added.
