Kolkata, Aug 11 (PTI) A tigress rescued from the Sunderbans died at a rehabilitation centre in South 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, officials said.
The development marked the second tiger death at the facility in recent times.
The adult tigress, ‘Thakurani’, had been rescued from a sandbar in the Thakuran river in December 2024, after unusual behaviour of the animal was noticed in the adjoining forest area, a senior official said.
The tigress was subsequently shifted to the Alipore Zoological Gardens, where she underwent treatment and remained under veterinary observation for several months.
‘Thakurani’ was later shifted to the Jharkhali Tiger Rehabilitation Centre, where she had been under regular care and observation for nearly two years, the official
said.
“However, despite continued monitoring and treatment, the tigress died on Tuesday morning,” the official said.
According to forest officials, three tiger deaths have been reported in the Sunderbans in recent times, including two at the Jharkhali Tiger Rehabilitation Centre.
The exact cause of ‘Thakurani’s’ death, however, is yet to be ascertained.
Veterinary examinations, post-mortem findings and the forest department’s report will be crucial in determining the cause, the officials said. PTI SUS CORR RBT
