Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Conducts Surprise Inspection Of Chennai’s Bio-CNG Plant | Video

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday carried out a surprise inspection of the Bio-CNG plant at Chetpet in Chennai and directed officials to strengthen scientific waste management across the state.

The facility, said to be India’s first public-private partnership-based Bio-CNG plant, processes around 100 tonnes of food and vegetable waste every day.

During the visit, Vijay instructed officials to ensure waste is segregated at the household level so that biodegradable waste can be scientifically converted into Bio-CNG. He also directed that non-biodegradable waste be channelled for use in road construction and the cement industry.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need to implement a comprehensive scientific waste management system across Tamil Nadu within a defined timeframe and asked officials to replicate similar Bio-CNG projects in urban areas across the state.

The Greater Chennai Corporation collects 6,150 metric tonnes of garbage daily, of which 3,200 metric tonnes is biodegradable, and 2,950 metric tonnes is non-biodegradable garbage and roadside soil particles, according to an official release.

The inspection came as the Vijay-led government seeks to improve waste segregation, recycling and sustainable disposal practices while reducing the volume of garbage sent to landfills.

Earlier last week, he conducted a surprise inspection at the MC Raja Social Justice Hostel in Saidapet where students raised concerns over poor infrastructure, inadequate security and staff behaviour. The Chief Minister arrived unannounced within four hours to personally evaluate the facility’s living conditions.

Students complained of restrictive hostel curfew timings that affected those attending part-time jobs and competitive examination coaching classes. They alleged that those returning late were locked out of the hostel, forcing them to spend nights outside, where some reportedly faced harassment and robbery, news agency PTI reported.

They also flagged water shortages, unhygienic food, broken restrooms, a lack of drinking water, insufficient CCTV surveillance, incidents of theft and ragging, and alleged abusive behaviour by hostel staff. Students further pointed to a shortage of personnel and the prolonged closure of recreational facilities such as the volleyball court.

Accompanied by Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu, Vijay bypassed standard bureaucratic protocol to record each grievance firsthand. The Chief Minister demanded immediate explanations from the department heads and hostel administration.

He directed officials to execute an immediate cleanup, upgrade basic amenities, and fix the security camera network.

Strict measures are being initiated against negligent hostel wardens and supervisors.
