New Zealand opener Devon Conway will miss the first ODI of the five-match series between India and New Zealand. India will face New Zealand in the first ODI on Wednesday (November 4) at Eden Park in Auckland, and according to a release shared by New Zealand Cricket on the eve of the fixture, Conway will not feature in the match after suffering a concussion.
“Devon Conway and Matt Henry collided while attempting a catch during the Blackcaps training today at Eden Park. Both players were immediately treated by medical staff on-site and received Head Injury Assessments. Conway was taken to A&E for further examination, which confirmed a concussion that has ruled him out of the first ODI against India tomorrow (on November 4),” NZC stated in a release.
“Both players will continue to be monitored, and their involvement in the Hero VIDA ODI series against India, Powered by Ai+ Nova Smartphone, will be updated in due course,” the release added.
In the absence of 35-year-old Conway, who has scored 1,692 runs in 43 ODIs for New Zealand so far, Tim Seifert will open the innings. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batter was added to New Zealand’s squad for the first three matches on Monday.
Seifert played all five T20Is for the Black Caps against India last week and scored 93 runs off 50 balls during the 192-run chase at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday (November 1).
There is no official confirmation regarding Henry’s availability for the first match, but it is believed that he will be fit to feature.
The hosts are already without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman for the home series against India. The duo was ruled out of the ODIs as well on Monday after missing the T20Is, as they failed to recover from their injury-related issues.
New Zealand squad for 1st ODI against India: Mitchell Santner (C), Michael Bracewell, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (WK), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Will Young, Blair Tickner
