Shefali Shah Recalls Her Separation From First Husband: ‘Nobody Told Me You Are Enough’

Shefali Shah has long empowered audiences through roles that celebrate women of all ages. But in real life, she initially struggled to believe that she was “enough” to live a joyful life on her own terms.

In a candid interview, Shefalirevealed that her unsuccessful first marriage to Harsh Chhaya taught her that she is capable of living the rest of her life independently. She further shared that she has reached a point where trying to please everyone feels both difficult and exhausting.

During Zoom’s Spotlight Sessions podcast, Shefali Shah said, “Nobody told me you are enough. You don’t need a husband, friend, brother, or sister to be complete. You are enough. If you have great relationships, fantastic. If you don’t, that is not going to determine your value. Nobody told me that. When you go through things, you realise. It comes to a make-or-break point, and that is when the realisation comes.”

Shefali Shah On Being Confident Alone

Shefali Shah recalled that during her separation from her first husband, a close friend asked her, “What if you never find love again? Would you be willing to take that chance?” Shefali said she was confident and ready to live alone if necessary. “I can’t be somewhere that doesn’t make me happy and confident, or where I don’t feel treasured,” she explained. “That’s when I moved out, stayed alone for the first time in my life because I’ve lived with my parents. As you start growing older, you stop caring. You are too tired trying to make everyone happy.”

Shefali Shah married Harsh Chhaya in 1994, and the couple separated in 2000. Later that same year, she married Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The couple has two sons, Aryaman and Maurya.
