Ranveer Singh’s high-octane espionage thriller Dhurandhar has run into yet another controversy. Just a day after the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film’s
release, the widow of Pakistani police officer Chaudhary Aslam has now raised objections and warned she will pursue legal action if her husband is portrayed inaccurately or disrespectfully in the movie. Why Chaudhary Aslam’s Family Is Objecting
Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, is set against the gritty backdrop of Karachi’s Lyari district—a neighbourhood historically controlled by rival criminal gangs and terror networks. In the film, veteran actor Sanjay Dutt plays Chaudhary Aslam, the real-life Karachi police officer famed for his fearless crackdown on gangsters and militants.
Aslam, who led decisive operations against figures like Rehman Dakait and Uzair Baloch, was assassinated on January 9, 2014, in a bomb attack on the Lyari Expressway. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban’s Mohmand chapter claimed responsibility for the killing, which also took the lives of two police officers, Aslam’s driver, and his guard. He had survived a previous bomb attack at his home in 2011.
Following the release of the film’s official trailer earlier this month, Aslam’s widow Naureen Aslam expressed her concern over the depiction of her late husband.
Naureen Aslam Takes Offence to a Trailer Dialogue
Speaking to PTI, Naureen said she is waiting for the film’s theatrical release on December 5 to fully assess how her husband has been portrayed. However, she has already objected to a specific dialogue where the character is referred to as the “child of the devil and a jinn.”
“We are Muslims and such words are disrespectful to not only Aslam but his mother as well, who was a simple honest woman,” she said.
Naureen asserted that she will not hesitate to pursue legal action if the film misrepresents, maligns, or propagandises Aslam’s image. “If I see my husband being portrayed wrongly or any propaganda against him in the film, I will definitely take all legal steps I can,” she stated.
Claims of “Maligning Pakistan”
Naureen also criticised what she sees as Indian filmmakers’ recurring interest in Pakistani narratives.
“It is strange that Indian filmmakers find no other subjects but to malign Pakistan,” she remarked.
“My husband was a brave and courageous police officer and his name was feared by criminals and terrorists. I am surprised that they have portrayed Rehman Dakait as a big terrorist although I know from my husband he was an extortionist, kidnapper and a criminal.”
In Dhurandhar, Akshaye Khanna plays Rehman Dakait, while R. Madhavan essays the role of Indian spymaster Ajay Sanyal. Arjun Rampal appears as Major Iqbal from Pakistan’s ISI. Ranveer Singh’s character remains largely undisclosed, though the trailer suggests he plays an Indian agent who infiltrates Lyari’s deadly underworld.
A Release Surrounded by Legal Clouds
The objection from Chaudhary Aslam’s family comes amid the ongoing petition filed by the family of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mohit Sharma, who have accused the film of drawing from the officer’s life without consent or proper permissions.
Despite these mounting concerns, Dhurandhar is currently slated to hit theatres on December 5.
