The Karva Chauth fast is an important Hindu tradition. On this day, married women typically observe a waterless fast, praying for their husbands’ long lives. After moonrise, they perform puja and break the fast with water. This centuries-old ritual continues to be widely observed.
However, concerns arise about pregnant women observing a waterless fast on Karva Chauth. Since women need to take special care of their diet during pregnancy, fasting can have significant effects on their health.
Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, told News18 that during pregnancy, women’s bodies require more nutrients due to physical and hormonal changes. Therefore, going without water and food
for long periods can be harmful, leading to issues like dehydration, fatigue, and low blood sugar, she said.
Dr Rawat further said that every pregnant woman’s condition is different, and a waterless fast can worsen the health of many women. Hence, this fast should not be observed without consulting a doctor.
The doctor explained that the body needs more water during pregnancy, as it helps maintain amniotic fluid, digestion, and blood volume. Going without water for the entire day on Karva Chauth increases the risk of dehydration significantly, which can affect the growth of the baby in the womb and lead to headaches, dizziness, and fatigue, she said.
Maintaining blood sugar levels is crucial for pregnant women. Staying hungry for hours can cause blood sugar to drop, leading to sudden weakness, anxiety, or fainting. If a woman has gestational diabetes, this can be even more dangerous. In such cases, it is important to consult a doctor.
Health experts believe that Karva Chauth fasting during pregnancy can only be observed if the woman is completely healthy and has consulted a doctor. Additionally, it’s better to fast with water and fruits rather than a waterless fast.
Medical experts advise that if a pregnant woman experiences discomfort such as dizziness, vomiting, or headaches, the fast should be broken immediately. During pregnancy, rigid fasting rules should be avoided, and flexibility based on health is recommended.
If a waterless fast is not feasible, doctors suggest maintaining the spirit of Karva Chauth by fasting on fruits or consuming only liquids.
