In a viral clip shared by X user Dr. Rajeshwari Iyer, the world got a peek behind the curtain of allegedly new MLA quarters from Gandhinagar. In a video (the authenticity of which News18 could not verify), the expansive flats aren’t just homes but high-tech hubs equipped with dedicated meeting rooms, massive halls, open kitchens, and three plush bedrooms.
But the real kicker isn’t the flat itself but the subsidised lifestyle funded by the public exchequer. According to the post, for a monthly rent of less than ₹40, an MLA enjoys:
- Free Electricity
- 3 Split ACs & a 43-inch TV
- Private Balcony, Refrigerator & Geyser
- Access to a Swimming Pool
“Even an ISRO scientist won’t get such luxury in India,” Iyer noted, hitting a nerve that resonated across platforms.
As expected, the Internet had a lot to say. One user stated that being an MLA is, in fact, a very tough
job. “Do you think becoming a MLA is easy? He/she meets 100s of people daily. Politics is among the hardest professions. Constant travel, constant public meetings, constant mind games, constant smile and charm required.”
Another also schooled the X user: “I have not don’t his in a while but I want to teach this young lady something… we are becoming a country of critics and illiterates only.. MLA salary in UP : Roughly ₹2.96 lakh per month in total emoluments, after the 2025 hike that became effective from 1 April 2025. Now let me tell her that over 1000 People visit my home everyday… a. Tea never stops b. At least 60-70 people eat food everyday- sometimes 200 c. My brother (he lost elections) still gives Rs200/250 to 50-80 odd people everyday for ticket to go back home as they are so poor. d. Biscuits/Water/Chair/Cooler/AC all of this costs as people ahem to be seated. Public service is extremely expensive and financially draining. Jameen girwi ho jaati hain election ke chakkar main../”
If you want a flat like this just become an MLA. Earn lakhs in salary and pay only ₹37.50 as rent with all amenities:
• Free electricity
• 3 split ACs
• 43-inch TV
• Private balcony
• Refrigerator & geyser
• Swimming poolEven an ISRO scientist won’t get such luxury in… pic.twitter.com/GE1lpmThld

Another questioned the intent of people who enter politics. “That means you think that politicians can develop india!, every politician comes for looting the Indian, enjoying luxurious life and make their belongings rich.” Similarly, another user added, “Do you really think it’s so easy to become an MLA? Do you even know the investment you need to win an election? I am not supporting politicians here, but what do you expect? Do you want to live in a JHOPDI? Most of the MLAs are already crorepatis, only an already rich person has means to contest in elections and win.”
Many quipped with funny retorts. “Possibly the best employment option to create generational wealth anywhere in the world,” wrote one user. But most users were largely disappointed with the disproportionate distribution of wealth. “₹37.50 rent for a 3BHK luxury flat with ACs, TV, fridge, swimming pool & FREE electricity?? While taxpayers bleed for every rupee and ISRO scientists work in basic conditions? This is not “facilities”, this is shameless loot of public money. Disgusting entitlement by our “leaders”. Fire them all. 🔥”
