What is the story about?
Magh
Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu or Maghor, is one of Assam’s most celebrated festivals. Observed in the month of Magh (January–February), it marks the end of the harvesting season and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. In 2026, Magh Bihu will fall on Thursday, January 15.
Significance of Magh Bihu
The festival coincides with the Earth’s slight axial shift, signalling the arrival of spring and the end of winter. The term “Bhog” means enjoyment or feasting, which is why the day is also called Bhogali Bihu. It is a time to celebrate abundance, express gratitude for the harvest, and strengthen community bonds.
Rituals and Traditions
Magh Bihu celebrations are lively and include:
- Uruka Night: Families prepare Bhelaghar and Meji (temporary bamboo huts) and cook traditional dishes like sunga pitha, til pitha, and coconut laddus.
- Bonfires: People take baths and light bonfires of bamboo, hay, and dried banana leaves.
- Music and Dance: Folk songs and dances celebrate community, joy, and cultural pride.
- Sharing Feasts: Families, friends, and neighbours dine together, promoting unity and generosity.
