A dust storm swept across parts of Noida on Sunday afternoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for several districts of Delhi and forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the National Capital Region (NCR).
In its 3.30 pm bulletin, the IMD said light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-60 kmph was very likely across Delhi-NCR over the next two hours. At 4.10 pm, a district-level nowcast upgraded several parts of the national capital to an orange alert, warning of moderate thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40-60 kmph.
The weather department also forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 50-70
kmph across Delhi-NCR. Similar conditions were predicted for several adjoining districts in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan over the next two hours.

The IMD uses a four-colour warning system to communicate weather risks. While green indicates no warning and yellow advises people to stay updated, an orange alert asks residents to be prepared for potentially disruptive weather conditions, including moderate thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

The forecast comes as Delhi continues to await the arrival of the southwest monsoon. The IMD has said isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Delhi, Haryana and neighbouring states over the coming days as weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon’s further advance into northwestern India.
