Shubman Gill is the captain of India’s Test team, but he will not come out to bat for the hosts in their second innings of the ongoing Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The 26-year-old
right-handed batter from Punjab was ruled out of the remainder of the match on Sunday morning due to a neck injury that he suffered on Day 2 of the ongoing red-ball match.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted an update on Gill’s fitness ahead of the start of the third day’s play and stated that he is under observation in the hospital and will take no further part in the Test match.
“UPDATE. Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” BCCI said in a tweet.
In the first innings, Gill came out to bat at No. 4 but returned back to the pavilion just after playing three balls due to a neck injury.
India 10/2 at lunch on Day 3
Gill’s absence will be a big setback for India in the ongoing match. The hosts slipped to 10/2 at lunch on Day 3, in reply to the 124-run target set by the Proteas. India lost their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and KL Rahul (1) in early exchanges with the plucky Proteas side.
Both the batters were dismissed by lanky South African pacer Marco Jansen, as India took lunch with No. 3 Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel at the crease.
In-form Jurel batting at No 4 in absence of Gill showed his form with a leg glance boundary to get off the mark as he remained unbeaten on 4 off 12 balls, while India’s experimental No 3 Sundar was on 5 from 20 balls, surviving some anxious moments.
