India’s aviation sector has witnessed rapid expansion over the years, connecting even remote regions to the rest of the world. With the rising number of travellers, several states have established multiple
airports to promote tourism, trade, and job opportunities. Among them, one state stands out for becoming the first in the country to host four international airports. That unique Indian state’s name is Kerala.
Kerala is the only Indian state that has four international airports: Trivandrum, Cochin, Calicut, and Kannur. This large aviation network highlights the state’s increasing global connectivity, driven by tourism, trade and its large expatriate population residing in Gulf countries.
These are the four international airports in Kerala:
Trivandrum International Airport
Established in 1932, Trivandrum International Airport is the oldest operational airport in Kerala. Situated in the state capital, it caters to diplomats, government officials, tourists, and travellers flying to destinations such as Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
The airport also plays a vital role in supporting major institutions like ISRO and Technopark, contributing to the region’s administrative and technological development.
Cochin International Airport
Cochin International Airport is the busiest aviation hub in Kerala. The airport directly connects to Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
It also stands out as the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. The airport was inaugurated in 1999 and since then, it has been serving as a crucial spot for international travel and cargo transport.
Calicut International Airport
Calicut International Airport primarily caters to Gulf-bound passengers from the Malabar region. It plays a crucial role in the expatriate-driven economy and supports food exports and pilgrimage travel.
With its strong air connectivity to West Asia, the airport serves as a vital link connecting families and communities across continents.
Kannur International Airport
Established in 2018, Kannur International Airport is the newest addition to Kerala’s aviation network. The new airport has expanded global connectivity in North Kerala, especially for districts like Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad. It has been emerging as the new hub for tourism and business.
Kerala’s Strong Global Connectivity
Kerala’s extensive aviation network and advanced airport infrastructure attract a large number of international travellers from every part of the state. For millions of Malayalis working in the Middle East, and for the growing number of tourists visiting Kerala to explore its beaches, backwaters, and Ayurveda, these airports ensure a smooth and time-saving travel experience. They also boost employment, healthcare access, business movement, and export economics.
