A now-viral video from Kota hostels has drawn widespread attention online, putting the spotlight on India’s coaching capital. The clip, shared by Instagram handle @rvcjinsta, shows ceiling fans in student hostels enclosed within heavy iron grills, a measure being considered to prevent suicides.
The footage quickly gained traction online, sparking both concern and debate. Kota, known for preparing thousands of aspirants for competitive exams such as IIT-JEE and NEET, has witnessed a troubling rise in student deaths in recent years. In response, authorities and hostel operators have been exploring various preventive measures.
Among the initiatives introduced are modifications to ceiling fans, including spring-loaded devices designed to detach under
excessive weight, thereby reducing the risk of self-harm.
While the viral video suggests the installation of metal grills around fans, there is no official confirmation that such caging systems have been widely implemented across hostels. Authorities have largely focused on redesigning fans to enhance safety rather than enclosing them entirely.
Beyond physical interventions, local administration has also emphasised the importance of mental health support. Measures such as regular counselling sessions, closer monitoring of students’ emotional well-being, and stronger support systems within hostels have been encouraged to address the root causes of stress among aspirants.
Despite these efforts, the viral clip has triggered mixed reactions online, with many questioning whether structural fixes alone can effectively tackle a complex mental health crisis.
“They will do everything but won’t improve education system,” said one user.
“Grills can be a good alternative 🥲,” said another.
“The students might think of a few other ways 🤷♀️,” a third user said.
“Hangs on the grill. Grill comes off. Break a rib. Hangs on the fan again. Two step verification,” a fourth user said.
“Hence proved Kota produces suiciders not Engineers and doctors,” said another
” Itni chinta hai to AC lagwa do,” said another
“Ab pankha saaf kaise krenge?” one more commented.
