Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the standout performer of IPL 2026, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament with a historic campaign. The teenage sensation amassed 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.31, not only clinching the Orange Cap but arguably redefining the way T20 cricket can be played through his ultra-aggressive, fearless batting approach.
His record-breaking tally of 72 sixes in just 16 matches, more than double the 43 struck by the next-best hitter, Abhishek Sharma, gave an indication of both his immense talent and extraordinary potential. Unsurprisingly, there has been growing debate around fast-tracking him into the Indian setup, although opinions remain divided on whether it would be too soon for him to make the leap to international
cricket.
After all, he is only 15.
Yet, Sooryavanshi‘s performances have belied his age. The U19 World Cup winner has taken on bowlers twice his age and far richer in experience without any hint of intimidation, excelling against them with remarkable confidence and composure.
With India set to tour Ireland later this month for two T20Is, calls for his inclusion have only grown louder.
The BCCI’s top brass has also been impressed by Sooryavanshi’s “exceptional” talent, with board secretary Devajit Saikia expressing confidence that the selection committee will act in the “best interest” of the young prodigy.
“Vaibhav is a new wonder kid in Indian cricket, and I’m sure he will also take the world by storm in the coming days,” Saikia told Hindustan Times. “And all our selectors are part of the IPL tournament. Everybody, all the selectors are watching these matches very closely, and in most cases, they are also present at the venue. So, in the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team’s UK trip, I’m sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and is in his best interest, given the way he has performed.”
“Many other players performed exceedingly well. But Vaibhav is exceptional, and I am very happy that God is kind, that a new wonder kid has been presented to the Indian cricket scene at this stage, and that he will definitely cross the boundaries very soon,” he added.
India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland will be played on June 26 and June 28, before the team heads to England for a five-match T20I series. The squad for the UK tour is expected to be announced around the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan, which begins later this week in Mullanpur.
