Ahmedabad is on course to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a historic moment for India, after the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport on Thursday announced its recommendation of the Gujarat capital as the proposed host city for the Centenary Games.
The recommendation comes after a rigorous evaluation process that saw Ahmedabad edge out Abuja, Nigeria, which had also presented a strong bid.
If approved at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025, Ahmedabad will become only the second Indian city, after New Delhi in 2010, to host the prestigious multi-sport event.

Mrs. Nita M. Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, hailed the announcement
as a defining moment for India’s growing sporting ambitions.
“India being recommended to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030 is a proud milestone in India’s journey as a global sporting powerhouse,” said Mrs. Ambani.
“It is a celebration of our nation’s sporting spirit and talent! My heartfelt gratitude to our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi ji for his visionary leadership and steadfast support in making this historic bid.”
She also linked the development to India’s broader Olympic aspirations:
“This moment marks another step forward towards our shared dream of bringing the Olympic Games to India.”
Ambani, who has played a leading role in developing sports infrastructure and youth programs through the Reliance Foundation, has long championed India’s ambition to host global sporting events.
Ahmedabad’s Vision for 2030
The Ahmedabad bid, officially known as the Amdavad 2030 proposal, highlights India’s commitment to delivering a full-scale, inclusive Games — with state-of-the-art venues, sustainable planning, and athlete-first experiences.
According to Commonwealth Sport, the selection followed an extensive evaluation process by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee, which examined candidate cities across key parameters, including:
- Technical delivery and infrastructure readiness
- Athlete experience and accessibility
- Governance and financial sustainability
- Alignment with Commonwealth Sport values
In its statement, Commonwealth Sport praised both Ahmedabad and Abuja for submitting “compelling proposals that reflect the ambition and potential of the Commonwealth Sport Movement.”
A Landmark Moment for India and the Commonwealth
If ratified, Ahmedabad 2030 will be the Centenary Edition of the Games — commemorating 100 years since the inaugural event in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
India, the most populous nation in the Commonwealth, continues to be a major force in the Games, finishing fourth on the medal table at the 2022 Birmingham edition.
The upcoming Games are expected to build on that success and further establish India as a leading global sports destination.
