Quinton De Kock Goes Past Rohit Sharma But Falls 3 Short Of Breaking 18-Year-Old IPL Record

South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock opened the innings for Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2026 against Punjab Kings at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 16, and scored 112 runs from just 60 balls. He hammered 8 fours and 7 sixes during his stay at the crease and helped MI post a fighting total of 195 for 6 in 20 overs.

By scoring 112 runs against PBKS, De Kock broke Rohit Sharma’s record of the highest score by an MI batter in the first innings of an IPL match. But he failed to break Sanath Jayasuriya’s 18-year-old record of the highest individual score by a Mumbai Indians batter in IPL.

Jayasuriya played an unbeaten knock of 114 runs from 48 balls for Mumbai Indians in the 2008 IPL match against Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium

on May 14.

De Kock, who replaced Rohit in MI’s playing XI as opener for the IPL 2026 match against the Punjab Kings, added 122 runs from 68 balls for the third wicket with Naman Dhir, who made 50 runs from 31 balls. They helped MI bounce back from 12 for 2 in 2.2 overs and reach a fighting total.

During his 112-run knock, De Kock also became the first overseas wicketkeeper-batter to score 3000 runs in the IPL, and he is the first non-Indian player to score an IPL century for three different teams.
