Jasprit Bumrah bowled four overs for India in the second T20I against South Africa on Thursday (December 11) but failed to take even one wicket. He conceded 45 runs in his quota of four overs and, for the first time in his 82-match-long T20I career, got smacked for four sixes in a match.
Only twice before has he been hit for 3 sixes, once in 2022 and once in 2016.
South African opener Reeza Hendricks scored the first six off Bumrah’s bowling on the third ball of the fourth over of South Africa’s innings, and then on the last ball of that same over, Quinton de Kock also smashed a six.
Bumrah, who is India’s second-highest wicket-taker (101) in T20Is, conceded two sixes – on the second and fourth balls of the 20th over as well. Donovan Ferreira was
the batter on both the occasions.
For India, apart from Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh also had a forgettable outing in Mullanpur. The left-arm pacer from Punjab, bowled four overs and conceded 54 runs. Like Bumrah, Arshdeep also remained wicketless. In his third over of the match, Arshdeep bowled seven wide balls. He finished the match by bowling a total of nine wide balls.
For the hosts, Varun Chakaravarthy picked up 2 wickets for 29 runs in four overs and one South African batter was sent back to the dugout by Axar Patel.
90 by De Kock
Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock opened the innings for South Africa on Thursday and scored 90 runs from 46 balls. During his stay at the crease, the left-handed batter hammered five fours and seven sixes. He added 83 runs for the second wicket with Aiden Markram (29 runs).
The knock by De Kock not only helped South Africa post a total of 213 runs on the board, but it will also help him attract franchises’ attention in the IPL 2026 auction, which is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
De Kock, who has played for SRH, RCB, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, LSG and KKR in the IPL, has registered himself for a base price of Rs 1 crore.
