IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, widely regarded as a dynamic and disciplined bureaucrat in the administrative service, has once again been transferred. Over 21 years, he has been transferred 24 times, which raises questions about the administrative system.
The 2005-batch IAS officer, often referred to as ‘Singham’ within administrative circles, has been moved from his position as Secretary of the Disability Welfare Department. He has now been appointed Principal Secretary in the Ministry, handling crucial portfolios, including Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation, and the Revenue and Forest Departments.
Short Tenures Despite Service Norms
As per administrative norms, an officer is typically expected to serve a minimum of three years in a single post. However, Mundhe’s average
tenure has been approximately one year, a pattern that continues with his latest transfer this year.
Throughout his 21-year career, Mundhe has consistently prioritised transparency and discipline in every role he has held. During his tenure as Secretary of the Disability Welfare Department, he addressed numerous pending cases and brought to light long-standing irregularities within the system.
His working style has often been seen as beneficial to the general public. Whether it involves tackling absenteeism among employees or addressing officials working under political pressure, Mundhe is known for taking firm action without hesitation.
Mundhe’s insistence on decision-making without political interference has not always been well received by those in positions of power. This uncompromising approach is widely believed to be a key reason behind his frequent transfers, which now total 24 in just 21 years of service.
