US President Donald Trump’s upcoming medical examination has once again brought his health and age under public focus, as the White House confirmed he will visit Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre on Tuesday for routine assessments.
According to a report by Bloomberg, this will be Trump’s fourth publicly known medical appointment since returning to office for a second term. The White House said the visit would include annual dental and medical check-ups, but offered few additional details.
The examination comes just weeks before Trump turns 80, making him the oldest person ever inaugurated as US president. Questions around his health have followed him since his first presidential campaign more than a decade ago, but attention has intensified
amid visible signs of ageing and growing political pressure at home and abroad.
Bloomberg reported that Trump has shown swelling in his legs, bruising on his hands and discolouration on his neck over the past year. He has also been diagnosed with a common vein condition and underwent preventative imaging scans on his heart and abdomen last year.
Despite the scrutiny, the White House strongly defended the president’s condition. Spokesman Davis Ingle called Trump as “the sharpest and most accessible President in American history” and said he remains in “excellent health”.
Trump himself has repeatedly dismissed concerns about his age. Speaking recently at a retirement community in Florida, he joked that he was “much younger” than the audience. He has also said he passed multiple cognitive tests with top marks.
Still, critics and medical experts have raised questions about the limited information released about Trump’s health over the years. Arthur Caplan, a medical ethicist at New York University quoted by Bloomberg, said the public would likely only learn “what Trump and the White House want us to know”.
The report also noted that Trump has long projected an image of strength and energy, often contrasting himself with former president Joe Biden, whose age became a major political issue during his presidency.
