New Delhi, Sep 9 (PTI) The CPI (Marxist) on Wednesday held a protest at the MCD headquarters over the collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan that claimed seven lives, alleging that the tragedy exposed failures in checking illegal construction in the city.
The party workers marched from Ranjit Flyover to the Civic Centre and submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister, lieutenant governor, MCD commissioner, mayor and the Union housing and urban affairs minister, according to a statement.
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) leaders said the collapse was linked to illegal construction, shortage of student hostels and failures in the MCD’s monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.
They demanded an independent investigation into the
alleged nexus between builders, contractors, bureaucrats and political patronage, and a judicial inquiry into the incident.
The party also sought Rs 1 crore compensation for the family of each deceased person and Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for those injured, along with free medical treatment.
It demanded compensation for students who lost books, laptops and academic documents, structural safety audits in student-dominated areas such as Satya Niketan, Mukherjee Nagar and Old Rajinder Nagar.
The CPI(M) also demanded safe accommodation for students, particularly those affected by the Satya Niketan collapse. PTI VBH VN VN
