A 20-year-old female student was found dead in her hostel room at the BITS Pilani campus in South Goa, police said on Monday.
The student, identified as Vishnavi Jitesh (20), was a third-year engineering student. Police said she was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet tied around her neck late on Sunday night. She was pursuing Electronics and Communication Engineering at the institute.
A senior police official said the Verna police received a call around 11.30 pm informing them that a female student had allegedly hanged herself in her hostel room. Police teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving the information.
According to the police, the student was a resident of Bengaluru and had been staying in the hostel on the campus located
in the Vasco area of South Goa.
This is the sixth case of suicide reported at the institute’s campus in Vasco over the past two years, raising concerns over student well-being.
The issue of student suicides at the BITS Pilani campus had also come up during the recent winter session of the Goa Legislative Assembly. During the session, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that students had taken extreme steps due to pressure related to examinations.
The institute has not yet issued any official statement on Sunday night’s incident. Police said further investigation is underway.
