Australian counter-terrorism teams are actively probing possible ideological or extremist motivations behind the attack, as it targeted a religious and cultural gathering that provided both symbolic value and maximum visibility, sources told CNN-News18.
“This attack was designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community,” the state’s Premier Chris Minns said.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was “devastated” by the terror attack. “This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith, an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” he said.
