The 2026 T20 World Cup season is upon us. While the tournament kicks off on Saturday (February 7), the warm-up matches begin as early as Monday.
Three matches will kick off this phase: Afghanistan will take on Scotland, India A will take on the USA and Canada will play Italy. India are the only team fielding their ‘A’ side in the warmups.
The first-choice Men in Blue are coming off an intense 4-1 series win over New Zealand and could do with a breather ahead of the marquee tournament. Hence, the hosts are using this opportunity by not fielding their main squad and testing their depth for the tournament.
Among them would be Tilak Varma. The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) has cleared him to return to action and play two warm-up games ahead of the 2026
T20 World Cup. He’ll return to action after a month following testicular surgery for an injury suffered during the Ranji Trophy in early January.
Varma would be gunning to make a case to return to the starting 11, especially considering Sanju Samson’s poor form at the top of the order.
