Nanded (Maharashtra), Jul 30 (PTI) A 30-year-old man was swept away while trying to cross a submerged bridge in Kinwat tehsil of the district amid heavy rains, officials said on Thursday.
Raju Reddy Dandelu (30), a gram panchayat employee from Kanchali village, was missing for more than 18 hours.
The incident took place on Kanchali-Andbori road on Wednesday evening. Water was flowing over a low-level bridge following incessant rainfall over the past two days and Dandelu was travelling from Kanchali to Reva Naik Tanda when he was swept away by the strong current.
Local residents immediately launched a search before police and revenue officials reached the spot. Personnel from the police, revenue department, village administration and disaster management
teams have been carrying out an extensive search operation.
However, rescue efforts have been severely hampered by the swollen river, strong currents and continuous rainfall, officials said.
The downpour has cut off several villages, including Pangarpahad, Andbori, Reva Naik Tanda and Apparaopeth.
Meanwhile, local residents have once again demanded the construction of higher and safer bridges on the Apparaopeth-Kanchali-Andbori route, as the existing low-level bridges frequently become submerged during the monsoon. PTI COR KRK
