Good News For Char Dham Yatris: 900-Metre Tunnel Linking Badrinath, Kedarnath Routes Completed

Uttarakhand News: A key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity on the Char Dham Yatra route is nearing completion in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, with the construction of a 900-metre-long tunnel connecting the Badrinath and Kedarnath highways now complete.

According to a report in India Today, the project also includes a 200-metre-long double-lane motor bridge over the Alaknanda River, whose construction has entered its final phase. According to officials, vehicle trials on the bridge are expected to begin from August 31.

Bridge Trials To Begin From August 31

Officials said that if the trial runs are successful, the third phase of the Char Dham Yatra will be operated through the newly constructed tunnel and bridge, offering a smoother and more efficient route

for both pilgrims and local residents.

Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said the bridge construction is likely to be completed by August 31. Once completed, the structure will undergo mandatory testing and trial procedures to assess its quality, safety and compliance with technical standards before being opened to traffic.

Project To Ease Traffic Congestion

The new tunnel and bridge are expected to provide significant relief to travellers heading towards Badrinath and Kedarnath.

At present, the Badrinath Highway passing through the Rudraprayag market is narrow and frequently experiences heavy traffic congestion, particularly during the pilgrimage season. Once the new route becomes operational, pilgrims will be able to bypass the crowded market area via the Jawari bypass and continue directly towards the two shrines.

Officials believe the alternative route will help reduce travel time, ease traffic bottlenecks and make the annual Char Dham pilgrimage safer and more organised.

Project To Strengthen Char Dham Yatra Infrastructure

District Magistrate Mishra said the project is aimed not only at improving traffic movement but also at strengthening the overall infrastructure and management of the Char Dham Yatra.

He said the upgraded connectivity is expected to benefit thousands of devotees travelling to Badrinath and Kedarnath every year by providing safer, faster and more convenient access to the pilgrimage sites.
