The Centre has notified the list of questions to be asked during the house-listing and housing census ahead of Census 2027, according to a notification published in The Gazette of India on Thursday.
The notification was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Office of the Registrar General, India, under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948. It supersedes an earlier notification issued in January 2020.
According to the notification, census officials will collect information from all households within their assigned areas through the house-listing and housing census schedule connected with Census 2027.
The questions cover details related to housing conditions, household composition and basic amenities. These include the building number,
census house number, predominant materials used for the floor, wall and roof, use and condition of the census house, and household number.
Information will also be collected on the total number of persons usually residing in the household, the name and sex of the head of the household, and whether the head belongs to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or other categories.
Notification of questionnaire of Phase I of Census of India 2027 – Houselisting & Housing Census has been issued. The questionnaire for Phase II i.e. Population Enumeration will be notified in due course.

The notification lists ownership status of the house, number of dwelling rooms, number of married couples living in the household, and the main source of drinking water, along with its availability.
Other details include the main source of lighting, access to latrine, type of latrine, waste water outlet, availability of bathing facility, kitchen and LPG/PNG connection, and the main fuel used for cooking.
The census will also record ownership of household assets such as radio or transistor, television, internet access, laptop or computer, telephone or mobile phone or smartphone, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, moped, car, jeep or van.
In addition, information on the main cereal consumed in the household and a mobile number for census-related communication will be collected.
