Sometimes a single social media reaction can spark a much bigger conversation than anyone expects. That appears to be exactly what happened after singer Chinmayi Sripaada shared her thoughts on a viral clip from the newly released Tamil film Blast.
The singer recently found herself at the centre of an online debate after reposting a scene featuring actress Preity Mukundhan from the action drama. While Chinmayi’s reaction was brief, several social media users quickly shifted their attention to the source of the video itself.
The controversy began when an X (formerly Twitter) user shared a 54-second clip from Blast, which hit theatres on May 28. The scene shows Preity’s character travelling in a cab late at night. After asking the driver to stop
the vehicle, she is questioned about how she plans to get home. She then reveals that she has no intention of getting out herself and instead attacks a man sitting beside her, apparently for harassing her.
The user posted the clip with the caption, “One toxic manager. One fearless heroine. Perfect ending (fire emoji).”
After coming across the video, Chinmayi reposted it and wrote, “whattay wow :).”
However, the post soon attracted criticism from several X users, who pointed out that the footage appeared to have been recorded inside a cinema hall. Since the film is currently running in theatres, many accused those sharing the clip of promoting piracy.
“Its Unethical to share the Content From the Movie just Released 2 days ago,” wrote one user while tagging production house AGS Entertainment and members of the film’s team.
Another commented, “Chinmayi reacting the posts and commented who illegally shoots the movie clip in theatre. Its is crime.”
“How can you share a video of a movie now running in theatres??” asked another user.
Some users even tagged the Tamil Nadu police’s social media handles while discussing the issue. “Promoting Piracy Whattay WOW,” wrote one person, while several others urged Chinmayi to delete the repost.
The viral clip comes from Blast, a martial arts action film directed by Subash K Raj in his directorial debut. Produced by AGS Entertainment, the film stars Arjun Sarja, Abhirami and Preity Mukundhan in leading roles.
The story follows Rajaraman, played by Arjun, a karate practitioner who enjoys a peaceful life with his wife Neelaveni and daughter Nila. Their world is turned upside down when unexpected threats force the family into a fight for survival and protection.
Since its release, Blast has received a mixed response from critics and audiences.
Meanwhile, Chinmayi was recently heard dubbing for Trisha Krishnan in RJ Balaji’s fantasy action drama Karuppu. In the film, Trisha plays lawyer Preethi, while Suriya stars as Karuppusamy, who takes human form as advocate Saravanan.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, Karuppu has gone on to become a major commercial success, grossing around Rs 300 crore worldwide.
