Chandigarh, Jun 23 (PTI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday directed officials to ensure prompt resolution of drinking water-related complaints across the state, saying providing clean and adequate drinking water to citizens is the government’s highest priority.
Chairing the 59th meeting of the Haryana Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Saini said there would be no shortage of funds for drinking water projects and ordered officials to ensure that no complaint related to water supply remains pending.
He warned that strict action would be taken against officers if complaints regarding drinking water supply are received and directed the issuance of a toll-free number for addressing such grievances.
The chief minister also directed officials
to replace old and damaged water pipelines to prevent contamination.
According to officials, around 1,245 kilometres of water supply pipelines will be replaced across the state.
Saini asked the concerned department to prepare proposals for supplying water to waterworks through pipelines instead of open channels.
He also directed immediate action to resolve issues such as overflowing sewerage systems, broken manhole covers and open sewer points.
To improve water quality, the chief minister directed officials to prepare a proposal to ensure that no untreated or polluted water is discharged into the Ghaggar river, similar to efforts being made for the Yamuna.
He also called for the installation of solar power plants at waterworks.
The chief minister directed officials to assess sewerage requirements in villages covered under the Mahagram Yojana and ensure scientific disposal of wastewater.
Surveys should also be conducted to provide drinking water facilities in remote ‘dhanis’ and in colonies developed under the government’s 100-square-yard plot scheme for economically weaker families, he said.
Saini further ordered thorough cleaning of sewerage systems in all cities before the onset of the monsoon season.
He also directed the formation of a committee comprising officials from Urban Local Bodies, Development and Panchayat Department and HSVP to inspect drinking water systems, sewerage infrastructure and sewage treatment plants (STPs).
The committee will monitor water quality and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels and submit recommendations.
The chief minister sought a special strategy to improve water supply in Panchkula, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri and Hansi, and directed the construction of a waterworks facility for the Pinjore-Morni-Kalka region.
During the meeting, projects related to drinking water supply, sewerage and sanitation infrastructure for 2026-27 were approved.
Officials said 1,330 development works were completed during the previous year, including 1,000 in rural areas and 330 in urban areas.
Commissioner and Secretary, Public Health Engineering Department, Pankaj Yadav, said 712 augmentation and improvement schemes for rural and urban drinking water supply, costing Rs 2,534.39 crore, have been approved for the current financial year. PTI VSD KVK KVK
