Kushinagar (UP), Jun 12 (PTI) Two children went missing while three were rescued after they were swept away by strong currents while bathing in the Gandak river here on Friday, police said.
The incident occurred in the Barwapatti police station area.
According to police, the five children from Bhawanipur hamlet had gone to bathe in the Gandak river, when they accidentally ventured into the deep waters and started drowning.
Hearing their cries for help, labourers engaged in embankment repair work nearby immediately jumped into the river and managed to rescue three of them. However, two of the children were swept away by the strong currents, police said.
The local police and the children’s family members rushed to the spot after receiving information
about the incident. Local swimmers and villagers conducted a search for several hours, but the two missing children could not be traced, they said.
Station House Officer Dinesh Kumar said a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has launched a search using a motorboat.
