A 34-year-old software engineer died allegedly of suffocation after a fire broke out at her rented house in Bengaluru on the night of Saturday, January 3, said the police, as reported by NDTV.
According to the police, the victim, named Sharmila, was a native of Mangaluru. She was employed at Accenture. The incident occurred in Subramanya Layout and came to light recently.
Smoke was seen billowing out from the house around 10:30 P.M. The homeowner, Vijayendra, noticed the fire and immediately called the Ramamurthy Nagar police. By the time the police reached the scene and broke open the main door, the fire and thick smoke had spread throughout the house.
The firefighters immediately brought the fire under control. Upon an inspection of the house,
Sharmila was found lying unconscious. The police rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.
The police suspect that Sharmila couldn’t escape the fire due to the intensity of the smoke that had filled the room. It is believed that she was staying in one room of the house while her roommate, who was away in her native place, lived in the other. The fire started in her friend’s room, which later spread throughout the building. As Sharmila opened the door, she breathed in a fatal amount of smoke, causing her to collapse.
Meanwhile, the police have registered an unnatural death case at Ramamurthy Nagar police station.
