US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday hinted at further developments in India-US relations, saying the two countries were working together across sectors, including defence, information technology and healthcare.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump spoke just last week, so stay tuned for what comes next,” Gor said at an event in Kolkata marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
Highlighting the growing partnership between the two countries, the envoy said cooperation and investment were creating significant opportunities for both sides.
‘Pick Any Sector, We’re Working Together’
“India and the US have a great relationship, there’s so much happening; pick any sector and we’re working together in it,” Gor said.
He pointed to recent defence cooperation,
including military exercises involving more than 500 troops during Exercise Tarang Shakti at Jodhpur Air Force Station in Rajasthan.
“If you look at defence, in the last two weeks alone, we have conducted exercises involving more than 500 troops at Tarang Shakti. We also had F-35s in Rajasthan for the first time,” Gor said.
IT, Healthcare Drive Bilateral Cooperation
The US envoy said businesses in both countries were making progress, with investments flowing in both directions and American companies setting up large production facilities in India.
“In terms of IT development, incredible things are happening in both directions, with investments in the United States and some of our companies opening large production facilities here in India. It is an incredible opportunity,” he said.
Gor also underlined India’s importance as a supplier of generic medicines to the US, saying Washington imported a significant quantity of such pharmaceuticals from India because it trusted the country.
“There is a lot happening,” he added, reiterating his optimism about the future of bilateral ties.
Kolkata’s Historic Links With US
Gor also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Kolkata and the US, noting that former US President George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American Consul to the city in 1792.
US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz said the anniversary was an opportunity to celebrate shared values and growing ties between the two countries.
“It is a privilege to celebrate this historic 250th anniversary here in Kolkata,” she said, calling the occasion as a reaffirmation of liberty, self-government and unity.
West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta and Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal were also present at the event.
