In a tragic incident, at least three members of a family drowned in the Arabian Sea in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra during their picnic, while four others who entered the sea with them went missing,
police said.
The incident took place around 4 pm off the Shiroda-Velagar beach on Friday, when a family of eight went for a picnic, news agency PTI reported. While two of them were natives of Kudal (Sindhudurg), six others had come from Belgaum (Belagavi in Karnataka).
All eight of them ventured into the sea for a swim. However, shortly after, they started drowning as they failed to gauge the depth of the water, a police official said.
Following the alert, police and local disaster management teams launched a rescue operation. Four bodies were recovered during the search, while three others remain missing.
A 16-year-old girl was rescued, who now remains in critical condition.
The rescue teams continued searching for the remaining victims until late evening.
