Haryana IPS Officer Suicide Case: Y Puran Kumar’s Family Allows Post-Mortem, Last Rites Today

The post-mortem of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar will soon be conducted after his family gave their consent, ending days of delay and tension surrounding one of the most controversial police deaths in recent years. The final rites are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Chandigarh on Wednesday, October 15 , as the case continues to send shockwaves through the state’s police and administrative circles.

Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer serving as Inspector General at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak, was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on 7 October 2025. He had suffered a gunshot wound, allegedly self-inflicted using his service revolver.

A nine-page suicide note, recovered from the scene, accused between 12 and 16 senior IAS

and IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia, of caste-based harassment and administrative persecution. The letter’s contents sparked nationwide outrage, with allegations that Kumar faced systemic discrimination due to his Scheduled Caste background.

Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, refused to allow a post-mortem until an FIR was registered against those named in the note. She accused the state administration of shielding the accused officers and demanded the inclusion of charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The standoff delayed the autopsy for several days before the family finally relented. Sources confirmed that the Chandigarh Police, along with a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), will oversee the process.

The probe has faced complications, particularly regarding access to Kumar’s laptop, which the family has withheld citing privacy concerns. They have, however, offered to share cloned forensic data with investigators.

Another Suicide?

In an unexpected twist, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar from Rohtak’s Cyber Cell also died by suicide days after the IPS officer’s death. His three-page note and video accused Y Puran Kumar of corruption and “using caste politics” to deflect accountability.

Sandeep Kumar had reportedly been investigating one of Puran Kumar’s aides, head constable Sushil Kumar, who was arrested earlier on corruption charges.

Administrative fallout

The chain of events has led to major reshuffles within the Haryana Police. DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was sent on leave, while several officers named in the note have been transferred. The state government has ordered a comprehensive forensic and administrative probe into both suicides, as caste discrimination and corruption allegations continue to dominate the investigation.
