United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth issued an uncompromising warning to Tehran, declaring that Washington will systematically target, destroy, and sink Iran’s oil tanker fleet if Iranian forces fire upon US military vessels.
The warning marks a dramatic escalation in West Asian maritime tensions. Delivering the ultimatum across social media platforms, Hegseth outlined a simple condition to prevent further military escalation: “All they have to do is not shoot at [the] US Navy”.
Targeted Strikes Following Warship Assaults
The Secretary of War’s direct rhetoric followed a retaliatory operation by US Central Command (CENTCOM), which disabled three Iranian oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
- The Trigger: The targeted strikes were launched after IRGC forces fired ballistic missiles at American naval warships, including an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer operating in regional waters.
- Targeted Vessels: US forces struck and disabled three commercial vessels—the M/T Downy near Kharg Island, the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and an empty vessel, the M/T Kylo—identifying them as part of a clandestine financial network backing paramilitary activities.

Stressing Washington’s military dominance across US Central Command
and Indo-Pacific Command theatres, Hegseth highlighted Tehran’s inability to defend its commercial and energy assets at sea.
Hegseth emphasised that Iran’s oil tanker fleet remains completely defenceless without effective naval or air coverage, noting that American submarines, warships, and combat aircraft hold the capability to strike these assets with total impunity.
Tehran Denounces Strikes as ‘War Crime’
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the destruction of its tankers, labelling the American military action a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and describing the strikes as a “war crime”. Tehran warned that Washington and its regional allies would be held fully accountable for any further military escalation.
The exchange underlines an increasingly fragile environment across critical maritime transit corridors, with Washington signalling an immediate shift towards targeting Iran’s primary economic lifeline if provocative strikes against US naval forces continue.
