Four decades of Indian couture, maximalist design and intricate craftsmanship came together as designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla celebrated 40 years in fashion with a star-studded evening at their new Mumbai flagship, Mubarak Baug.
Held on September 6, the celebration brought together names from Bollywood, fashion and Mumbai’s social circuit, with Nita Ambani, Isha Ambani, Shloka Ambani and Radhika Ambani among the guests. The evening was as much a celebration of the designers’ enduring fashion legacy as it was a showcase of the elaborate Indian craftsmanship that has defined their work.
Nita Ambani Makes a Statement in Red
Nita Ambani stood out in a striking red saree, its rich texture and intricate detailing giving the traditional silhouette a dramatic yet elegant finish. She
paired the look with a matching blouse and kept her jewellery relatively understated, allowing the deep red of the saree to remain the focus.
Isha Ambani Chooses Shimmering Silver
Isha Ambani embraced the evening’s couture aesthetic in a shimmering silver-white ensemble. The fitted outfit featured elaborate embellishment, sequins and embroidery, complemented by a statement diamond necklace and matching earrings.
Shloka Ambani Goes Classic in Ivory and Gold
Shloka Ambani opted for an ivory-and-gold ensemble, pairing a delicately embroidered top with a flowing white skirt. A dupatta finished with a broad golden border added a traditional touch to the otherwise contemporary silhouette.
Radhika Ambani Brings Floral Detail
Radhika Ambani chose a white-and-purple embroidered ensemble, with intricate floral motifs providing the highlight. The contrasting colour palette gave the traditional Indian look a distinctive, contemporary edge.
A Star-Studded Evening for the Designers
The Ambani family was joined by several prominent names from the film and fashion industries. Dimple Kapadia, Asha Parekh, Rahul Dev, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Ali Fazal, Richa Chadha and Madhoo Shah were among those spotted at the celebration. Other guests included Neetu Kapoor, Genelia Deshmukh, Riteish Deshmukh and several models associated with the designers’ long fashion journey.
One of the evening’s highlights was the return of several OG models from the designers’ earlier years, including Rakshanda Khan, Rahul Dev, Diandra Soares, Dipannita Sharma, Alesia Raut, Nethra Raghuraman and Carol Gracias. The showcase effectively connected the house’s past with its present, reinforcing the scale of the designers’ four-decade legacy.
Four Decades of Indian Craftsmanship
Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla began their creative partnership in 1986 and went on to build one of India’s most recognisable couture houses. Over four decades, the duo has become closely associated with an exuberant design language rooted in Indian craftsmanship, particularly Chikankari, Zardozi, real mirror work and Resham embroidery. Rather than simply preserving these techniques, their work has repeatedly adapted them for contemporary couture.
Their 40th anniversary year has also seen the opening of Mubarak Baug, their expansive new flagship housed inside Mumbai’s historic Framjee Cawasjee Institute. Designed through their interiors and design venture A Wonder Room, the space brings together couture, jewellery, archival pieces, art and craft across 20,000 square feet.
The name Mubarak Baug, meaning “a garden of celebration,” captures the spirit of the milestone, a look back at four decades of Indian fashion while creating a new space for the designers’ maximalist vision to evolve.
For Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, the evening was ultimately more than an anniversary party. It was a celebration of the craft traditions, collaborators, models, celebrities and generations of Indian fashion that have shaped their journey, with the grandeur of Mubarak Baug providing the perfect setting for the next chapter.
