New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) A 37-year-old man was arrested after allegedly vanishing with Rs 23.60 lakh collected on behalf of his employer, with police recovering Rs 20.80 lakh in cash, an official said on Saturday.
The accused allegedly stopped all contact from his known mobile numbers and travelled across multiple states in an attempt to evade police, they said. He eventually returned to Delhi, with police tracing his location to Uttam Nagar, following which he was arrested.
The accused, Arjun Sharma, was working at a chemical business based in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar and had been sent to collect Rs 23.60 lakh from a party in Saraswati Vihar on August 21, police said.
After collecting the money — which he was supposed to deposit in a bank
— Sharma allegedly stopped responding to calls, switched off his mobile phone and became untraceable, prompting his employer to approach Adarsh Nagar police station.
A case was registered under the relevant section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on August 24, police said.
They said Sharma had stopped using his known mobile numbers and social media accounts in an attempt to evade detection. Investigators used technical surveillance and field verification to track his movements and reconstruct his route.
The accused was eventually traced and apprehended from southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area.
During interrogation, Sharma allegedly disclosed that he had travelled across multiple locations, including Jaipur, Chandigarh and Manali in Himachal Pradesh, to evade the police, police said.
A scooter allegedly used in the offence and three mobile phones were recovered from the accused, besides Rs 20.80 lakh of the stolen Rs 23.60 lakh. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining sum, they added. PTI SSJ ARB ARB
