Months after retiring from T20Is and Tests, Rohit Sharma is slowly getting used to watching T20Is on TV rather than playing them. He may have retired from the shortest format, but the upcoming T20 World Cup at home won’t miss him much. The mega ICC event is returning to the subcontinent after 10 years, and Rohit, who lifted the trophy last year, has been named its brand ambassador.
On Tuesday, ICC chief Jay Shah made the announcement at the schedule release, an event that took place in Mumbai.
Rohit remains active in the ODI format. It is uncommon for a current player to be announced as a brand ambassador for an ICC event, which made him feel extremely honoured.
“Someone told me that no active player has been named an ambassador before, so it’s
a great privilege and honour for me,” Rohit said.
Rohit led India to victory in the previous T20 World Cup in 2024, and he is hopeful for a repeat performance by the Suryakumar Yadav-led team in front of the home crowd.
“Hopefully, we can recreate the magic we made last year with a different group of players. Winning an ICC event is a significant challenge, and in my 18-year career, I have been fortunate to win two recently. To finally secure those trophies feels good,” Rohit said.
Transitioning away from the two formats has been challenging, but Rohit is gradually adapting by spending quality time with his family, training, and attending social events.
“Watching from the other side, having played in all the T20 World Cups so far, feels different. I’m getting used to sitting at home and watching,” Rohit said after being named the brand ambassador by ICC chairman Jay Shah.
Rohit has had a prolific T20I career for India, amassing 4231 runs at an average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 140.89.
