External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Thursday (local time) called for zero tolerance towards terrorism and urged the international community to avoid any form of accommodation or indifference to terrorist
activities.
While speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York, Jaishankar emphasised that terrorism remains a persistent and dangerous disruptor of global peace and development.
“It is imperative that the world display neither tolerance nor accommodation to terrorist activities. Given the extensive networking among terrorists, those who act against them on any front actually render a larger service to the international community as a whole,” he said.

Jaishankar further highlighted that the world is grappling with challenges of conflict, economic stress, and terrorism. Against this backdrop, he criticised the limitations of existing multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations, saying they have been found wanting in effectively addressing contemporary crises.
Asserting “the need for reforming multilateralism has never been greater,” Jaishankar called for urgent structural changes to make global governance more representative, responsive, and effective.
Jaishankar also emphasised the G20’s role in the volatile global landscape.
“We, as members of G20, have a particular responsibility to strengthen its stability and give it a more positive direction that is best done by undertaking dialogue and diplomacy, by firmly combating terrorism, and by appreciating the need for stronger energy and economic security.”
The Union Minister also underscored that India’s focus is on the correlation between international peace and global development.
He said that the global peace and development have seen parallel deterioration in recent times—particularly to the detriment of the Global South.
While referring to ongoing conflicts like Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Hamas, Jaishankar said that such geopolitical tensions directly impact global energy, food, and fertiliser security, especially in the Global South.

“Apart from jeopardising supplies and logistics, access and cost themselves became pressure points on nations,” he said.
He further urged the international community to prioritise “dialogue and diplomacy” over actions that could worsen existing tensions.
“Peace can certainly enable development, but by threatening development, we cannot facilitate peace. Making energy and other essentials more uncertain in an economically fragile situation helps no one. The way out is to move the needle towards dialogue and diplomacy, not in the opposite direction towards further complications,” he said.
