Actor Anjum Batra, who has entertained audiences with his roles in Chamkila, Mamla Legal Hai, Wild Wild Punjab and more, recently opened up about what fans can expect from Mamla Legal Hai Season 2, and it’s a surprising shift for his character, Mintu.
Talking about the evolution of his role, Anjum revealed that the new season brings an unexpected depth. He shared, “In this season, it’s the complete opposite. Even I wasn’t expecting that this layer would be added to Mintu’s character. When I talk about layers, I mean the writers have smartly added nuances to him, which I can’t reveal much about. The audience is very smart these days, they’ll understand what the actor must have been thinking while performing a particular scene. So yes, it was very challenging
for me as an actor. It’s a situation you wouldn’t even imagine this character being in.”
When asked about his process of building Mintu from scratch, the actor admitted that time wasn’t on his side. He said, “I didn’t have much time because I was already shooting for Chamkila, and the very next day after it wrapped, we began shooting for Mamla Legal Hai Season 1. So I didn’t get time to prepare extensively for Mintu. But our writers, Saurabh Khanna, and director Rahul Pandey had already created such a fertile ground for the character that I didn’t have to do much.”
He further added that the collaborative environment allowed him creative freedom on set. “If something came to my mind, whether it was improvisation or adding a dialogue, they were always open to it. While performing, I gradually understood the character and how to approach him.”
Reflecting on his acting training, Anjum noted that under different circumstances, he would have dived deeper into technical preparation. “If I had more time, given my acting school background, I would have worked on the character’s dressing, diction, intonations, tempo, rhythm, and dialogue delivery. But despite not doing all that, I feel the character turned out even better.”
He concluded by emphasising the importance of trust in storytelling. “Sometimes, you just have to believe in your writer and director. I did that, and it worked really well for me. The audience truly loved the character.”
Mamla Legal Hai Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
