Sophie Devine’s Unusual Stumping At WACA During WBBL Sparks Fan Reactions | Watch
News 18
Perth Scorchers skipper Sophie Devine’s bizarre stumping left fans, as well as the star Kiwi cricketer, stunned at the WACA, as her team took on the Sydney Sixers in the third game of the Women’s Big Bash
League on Sunday, November 9.
The incident took place in the eighth over of Perth’s innings when Devine, on three, charged down the pitch to attack spinner Ashleigh Gardner. She missed the delivery, while wicketkeeper Emma
Manix-Greeves fumbled the take.
The ball deflected off Manix-Greeves’ body onto the stumps before ricocheting away and in a reflex action, she brushed the stumps again with her gloves.
Amidst the confusion, the on-field umpires Ahmad Khan and Kate Holloman referred the decision upstairs to determine whether the bails were dislodged by the ricochet or by the keeper’s gloves.
After several replays, third umpire Ashlee Gibbons confirmed that Devine was out stumped, ruling that the stumps lit up moments before Manix-Greeves’ gloves made contact.

Devine stood in disbelief as the decision appeared on the big screen, while the WACA crowd reacted in shock. The bizarre dismissal only compounded Perth’s troubles in what proved to be a forgettable outing for the hosts.
Opting to bat first, Perth were dismissed for a paltry 109, with Ashleigh Gardner picking five wickets. The chase was a straightforward one, as Ellyse Perry and Sophia Dunkley built a 112-run opening partnership to take Sydney past the target.
At the end of Day 1 action at the WBBL, Sydney find themselves on top of the table with a net run rate of 3.27. Melbourne Renegades follow in second, having beaten Brisbane Heat earlier in the day.
