Travel in Switzerland is beautiful, but for one American YouTuber, it also came with an eye-watering price tag. A simple one-hour cab ride turned into a major shock when Gina Darling, a content creator and G4 TV host, realised she had to pay the equivalent of $338 (approximately Rs 30,500) for her journey.
While cabs are an everyday convenience for many around the world, the expenses made Gina rethink her choice.
American TV Host’s Expensive Cab Ride In Switzerland
Gina shared her ordeal in an Instagram video recorded mid-ride. She explained that she chose a cab over trains because she was travelling with heavy luggage and was in a hurry.
Along with the video, she wrote, “Ended up being $338 USD LOL. Yes, I know trains and Uber exist but I was in a hurry
with a lot of heavy luggage. Great tap water though LOL.”

What Are People Saying Online
Since being shared online, the video has accumulated more than three million views. In the comment section, many viewers weren’t surprised by the price.
One user commented, “Don‘t be doing anything you normally do without checking the price in Switzerland like, not even olive oil.”
Another said, “Who takes a taxi for 1 hour in Switzerland?”
“1 hour cab rides are not a normal thing outside America. Europe has trains, probably would have been $20,” someone else pointed out.
“Go to one of the expensive cities in the world and complaining about it is expensive,” a person added.
“They get you with overpriced watches, chocolate every other time so don’t feel bad,” an individual wrote.
“Switzerland has a really good public transportation network; never take a cab here,” read another comment.
How To Travel Smart In Switzerland
Switzerland is undeniably expensive, especially for dining and sightseeing but smart planning can help manage costs. Budget-conscious travellers can follow a few tips to avoid shocks like Gina’s:
Travel Seasons: April-June or September-October tend to have lower prices on flights and accommodations.
Swiss Travel Pass: Covers most public transport and offers discounts on mountain excursions.
Cook or Picnic: Buy groceries from Coop or Migros or use apps like Too Good To Go for affordable meals.
Stay In Hostels: Consider staying outside major tourist hubs like Interlaken.
Skip Expensive Peaks: Jungfraujoch and similar attractions are pricey. There are cheaper spots with equally stunning views.
Sample Daily Costs
Budget Traveller: Daily expenses can be kept between CHF 70–100 (Rs 7,900 to Rs 11,300). This usually covers a hostel stay, groceries for simple meals and free activities like walking tours, parks or exploring towns.
Mid-Range Traveller: For more comfort, daily costs range from CHF 150–250+ (Rs Rs 16,900 to Rs 28,300). This typically includes a budget hotel, meals eaten at restaurants along with groceries and some paid activities such as museums, cable cars or scenic viewpoints.
